      • Relationship to International Agreements on Sustainable Development
How the partnership contributes to the implementation of Agenda 21, the Programme for the Further Implementation of Agenda 21, and the Johannesburg Plan of Implementation
As an international NGO, ISES is actively involved in international multilateral activities. The Society was an active participant at the Rio Summit, the World Summit on Sustainable Development, and the CSD activities relating to energy, for instance the CSD 14 and15 meetings where side-events have and will take place. The topic of the 2006 CSD-14 ISES side-event was “Developing Countries – Transitioning to a Renewable Energy Future”. Two side-events are in planning for the CSD-15, one on cooperation between industrial and developing countries to tackle climate change, the second on potentials of renewable energy technologies in Africa and Asia as 100% scenarios to meet energy needs. ISES works in the areas of sustainable development, poverty alleviation through equitable access to energy through various activities, including projects and raising awareness at public and decision-making levels. In this way the work of ISES addressing the objectives set forth in the MDGs.
In 2005, the ISES Solar World Congress was concluded with a Resolution and Communiqué. With this document, 1600 scientists and solar industry delegates from 79 countries who attended the Congress confirmed their resolve to respond to the joint challenges of climate change, arising from human induced global warming and of achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for the reduction of world poverty.

Other examples of ISES’ work towards sustainable development through renewable energies are two position papers. In 2003 the first ISES White Paper, “Transitioning to a Renewable Energy Future” was published providing a rationale for effective governmental renewable energy policies worldwide. In 2005, a second White Paper titled “Renewable Energy Future for the Developing World” was published addressing implementation policies to support renewable energies specific to developing countries.

Several projects have also been completed or currently running that address sustainable development and MDGs. For instance ISES is leading a project on the topic of solar energy for food processing and conservation. The project aims to build a network of solar food processing experts worldwide to improve the methods and technologies for the sustainable production of food using solar energy. Solar cooking and processing is a suitable, economical and reliable option to cook and process food in the developing and developed world.

        Coordination Mechanism of the Partnership
ISES is made up of a network of Members, National Sections, Regional Offices, the Board of Directors and the International Headquarters.

        Members
The members of ISES form the foundation upon which the ideals, goals and activities of the Society are built. A rich source of knowledge, experience and ideas, it is commitment and participation that set the ISES membership apart. Drawn from all over the world, members form a global community, unified through common goals. Their service requirements drive the services and products the Society offers.

        National Sections
The National Sections of ISES network and co-ordinate Renewable Energy professionals and activities in the various member countries. They represent the cultural diversity of the Society as an international organisation, and initiate new projects and activities based on intimate knowledge of local conditions and requirements. The ISES motto "Think globally, act locally" is based on this local insight combined with the strong global perspective of an international player.

        Regional Offices
Where strong regional co-ordination is required, ISES has formed Regional Offices aimed at supporting the intra-regional work of the Society. Currently, the Society has Regional Offices for Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia-Pacific.

        Board of Directors
Selected by the members of the National Sections, the members of the ISES Board of Directors initiate, accompany and advise the Society in its activities, projects and initiatives. From this body is drawn the Executive Committee of the ISES Board, which forms the link to the day-to-day executive activities of the International Headquarters. The Committee consists of the President, four Vice-Presidents, an Immediate Past-President, a Treasurer and a Secretary. The President and Vice-Presidents are elected by the Board.

        International Headquarters
The Villa Tannheim in Freiburg, Germany, is the seat of ISES. Here the International Headquarters manages the extensive global network of ISES in a building extensively renovated with renewable energy and energy efficiency components. Focussing on innovative, effective organisational management, sensitive to cultural diversity and integrative in its practices, the ISES International Headquarters attempts to combine a pro-active approach to the furthering of renewable energy technologies with a communicative, professional and business-oriented executive philosophy.

The Society is constantly expanding its activities, products and services. Conferences and workshops to bring people together, publications and information systems to keep them well informed, and access to resources that they require.

Membership of ISES is also an outreach activity. Linking north and south, east and west, the Society stands for the globalisation of the renewable energy community. Concrete projects and initiatives involving members from all over the world are initiated all the time-weaving far-flung individuals together in a close-knit team, one with common goals, common interests, and diverse and stimulating ideas.

Corporate membership of ISES represents a constructive way for institutions and companies to network, interact, and support the global development of renewable energy everywhere.

The ISES "Council for Industry" as well as the "Council for Research" are platforms within the ISES structure to serve as forums and outreach activities for bringing together trade & industry with the scientific & research community. Several topics are on the agenda including addressing problems and identifying solutions which can be communicated at the international level, for instance to the United Nations (ISES is accredited since 1973), IEA and other international organisations ISES is cooperating with such as the International Renewable Energy Alliance (IREA).

These joint activities enforce a renewable energy community around the world pursuing a vision: "Rapid Transition to a Renewable Energy World"
