Scope: National:
- India

Status: Ongoing

Timeframe:
Start:     End:

Lead Institution: International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT)

Stakeholders/Partners:  EIP-Niger

Relevent issues: - Energy and rural development

Objectives/Challenges:
Increase access to energy for the poor
Sequester carbon
Catalyze greenhouse gas sinks

Lessons Learned:
Sustainability, scalability and transferability: This project was based on a successful project in India also managed by ICRISAT. As part of the India project, the village was able to sell carbon offsets to the World Bank.

Policy Options:
Biofuel projects for rural communities in Niger.

Summary:
This afforestation project focuses on three tree species that provide seeds for biofuels and maintain soil water retention. The communities involved donated land and planted trees that produce oil-rich seeds. These seeds will be crushed into biofuel, replacing the diesel fuel that currently operates the village flour mills.
